George Patton

The name Patton has almost become synonymous with “General,” the two words have become nearly interchangeable in American history. When the name General Patton comes to mind we are automatically inundated with themes of strength, and tough resolution.
Patton was a man who seemed to embody the old American ethos’ of the rugged individual who shattered all expectations, decimated the status quo, and pulled himself up by his bootstraps, succeeding when all odds were against just because he was audacious enough to try. In his exploits Patton seems to loom larger than them all.

Inside you will read about…

✓ A Patent for Patton
✓ In Between War
✓ This Means War
✓ Operation Husky
✓ Invasion of Normandy
✓ The Battle of the Bulge
✓ Man of Controversy
✓ The Last Days of Patton
And much more!

But Patton was not some comic book superhero, he was a real person and just as flawed as the rest of us. He had his hopes and fears, he made his mistakes, and he lived his life. In order to understand Patton, you can’t focus on just one side of this larger than life personality; you have to take in the whole picture. This book allows you to do just that.

George Patton A Life From Beginning to End World War 2 Biographies eBook Hourly History

While many of the books in the Hourly History series are successful in presenting a condensed version of a person or past event, this book on the life of General George Patton is a mixed effort, at best.

On the positive side, many aspects of Patton's formative years as well as his military exploits are documented, and as promised, it is possible to complete this book within an hour. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter were enjoyable, and even though I was familiar with many of them, it was good to be reminded of Patton and what he believed. As the book demonstrates, Patton was not a man to be quiet when he encountered anyone who did not agree with his basic ideas.

Poor editing in the form of punctuation and sentence structure appear periodically through the book. An example: "This was Patton's rationale for keeping thousands of people under barbed where and armed guard 24 hours a day." One careful read through the book would have taken care of many, if not all, of these issues. Additionally, the author's word choices don't always accurately depict Patton. I would agree he was strongly opinionated, but question the twice-used description "unhinged" (mentally unbalanced) as well as "dastardly" (wicked and cruel). Patton was certainly outspoken and at times viewed by his superiors as a loose cannon, but he had strong personal convictions. For instance, while not condoning his actions when he slapped two soldiers diagnosed with combat fatigue, his actions were not dictated by a decision to be wicked and cruel. History books better serve the readers when authors do not inject their personal opinions; rather, they supply the facts and allow readers to decide for themselves.

Overall, a decent read and one that may cause me to reread some of the books I have or purchase new ones...but not one of the better efforts from Hourly History. Three stars.

George Patton A Life From Beginning to End World War 2 Biographies eBook Hourly History Reviews

I read this book, as part of a college course on leadership. Despite his faults at times, this book about Patton really did show what kind of leader Patton was. Overall, I did enjoy the book, and how short it was, as for me, it was a fairly quick read. Reading on the app was a new experience for me, though it took a little to get used to, it was okay for my needs. I don’t know though how likely I would use the app, as I prefer to read physical books, or e-books on a different system which I find easier to use in my opinion. However, regarding the book itself on Patton, I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about him, and the leadership he showed.
Iconic General George S. Patton was one of the most intriguing characters in military history. Picking up the reins from his military family, he graduated from West Point and was commissioned into the U.S. Army. While only an average student, he rose steadily through the ranks to become one of the top generals in WW II. There have numerous books written on Patton and a thrilling movie starring George C. Scott.

“George Patton—a Life From Beginning To End” is unique among all the other books. It is compressed so you can read it in an hour, adhering to the publishing model of all books from Hourly History Publishing. Still it covers the key elements of Patton’s life and career. Well written and concise, it is a good, quick and informative read.
Undoubtedly the greatest General America has ever had. Although his leadership was questionable after the War, particularly his supervision of freed POW's, his sheer determination to win for America, surpasses all other circumstances. Slapping two soldiers to motivate them and killing two farm animals to keep his convoy moving, was unacceptable but, these actions may have instilled as sense of patriotism that helped the War effort. I've been to his grave at the American cemetery in Luxembourg several times and I always wonder what type of impact he would have made in Korea. I've read much material on this great General and I must say this is one of the best, most accurate short history books I've ever read. Well worth the short time to read.
What can I say; we so badly need another General Patton just like we need another President Reagan. This book tells it like it was. Patton was a perfect general and a imperfect man. There have been many good generals in our history but few great generals. Patton was one of the great generals; beloved by his men and harassed by the press. If you are a fan of military history you will enjoy this book.
This is not a biography, but more the cliff notes to the life of General George S. Patton. As it is, it hits the highlights, but while it hints at some of the multidimensional character of Patton, it then fails to capitalize on those themes. For instance, in the introduction it mentions Patton's belief in reincarnation, but then fails to mention that the entire campaign in Normandy and across to Germany was planned with the knowledge of Caesar's routes where rivers could be easily forded, so that he could keep going if the Germans blew up the bridges. Why introduce such an issue, but then fail to make the connections?
The book does a good job of dispensing with the numerous idiotic conspiracy theories about the death of Patton, and sticks to the obvious facts.
For the rest, the book suffers a bit from lack of editing, with some typos, and a few annoying mannerisms that could stand smoothing out. In all, if you're in a hurry, this is probably a fair way of understanding the significance of one of the most important generals of WWII, and arguably one of the most important generals ever in US history, but you'll miss out on some of the more profound stuff. Also the dimension of his personal life is essentially absent from this book, even though it would be critical to understanding his development. Even the movie Patton may do a better job in that regard.
